Grounds
If you want to ask the court for a limited divorce in Maryland, you have to have a legal reason (grounds). The grounds have to be what Maryland divorce law permits:
- Cruelty of treatment of the complaining party;
- Excessively vicious conduct toward the complaining party;
- Desertion (no time period required); or
- Voluntary separation (no time period required).
Before you even think about deciding whether you should file for a limited or an absolute divorce, contact us to arrange an appointment to talk about your case. We can help you understand what each “ground” means, what the requirements are for each one as they apply to your situation, and whether you may have “grounds” for an absolute divorce or can work out a marital settlement agreement that will keep you out of court until you are ready to file for an absolute divorce.
